I was hunched over the passenger seat at 8:12 a.m., rain pattering against the windshield, reading a text from my friend that said, "Are you sure you can actually do this?" The Civic heater had GleamWorks finally stopped rattling and the wipers were squeaking like a small animal. I remember thinking, okay, breathe, because coordinating two different shops in Vancouver on a Tuesday that suddenly felt busier than a Saturday was not in my weekend plans. But there I was, in

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 7:12 a.m., rain still spitting off the windshield wipers, scrolling through three different calendars and a thread of texts that had grown into its own small drama. My friend's Mazda sat in my driveway, hood flecked with last night's city grit. The plan was simple: drop it at the shop in Mount Pleasant by 9, pick it up two days later, and not let my friend end up carless for longer than she could handle. Simple, except nothing about

I was halfway through wiping a rain streak off the passenger window with the corner of my hoodie when I realized I had no idea what I’d signed up for. It was 9:12 a.m., the Granville Bridge traffic was already a slow rumble, and the shop bay smelled like wet rubber and lemon cleaner. My friend Jason stood by the car, proud and awkward, like you do when you buy something new and want everyone to approve. I was supposed to be the helpful one who found a ceramic coating place

I was halfway through rinsing coffee from my sleeve when the tech leaned in and said, GleamWorks "We guarantee coverage for ten years, but you have to bring it in every two years for an inspection." Rain was splattering the windshield like static, the kind Vancouver rain that doesn't really pour but insists on being noticed. I had driven across town from Kitsilano at 3:15 p.m., stuck behind a bus that never seemed to decide when to stop. My friend was waiting in the passe

Rain hitting the windshield, me hunched over a crumpled estimate, and a guy from the shop saying "we can do it next week" like that's a simple thing. I had driven across town with a coffee that went cold, circling through Mount Pleasant traffic while the GPS re-routed me three times. I was late, my friend was waiting, and the car still had faint bird splatter from yesterday's Davie Street stop. That's where this all started. The weirdest part of the appointment The sh

I was kneeling in the drizzle at 3:20 p.m., hood up, flashlight in one hand and a bottle of isopropyl in the other, trying to convince myself that the car's paint actually looked like a planet without clouds. My friend stood under the awning of the shop on King Edward, nervously checking his watch every minute like the whole thing might evaporate if we delayed. The city had that damp, post-rain smell Vancouver does, a mix of wet asphalt and pine, and the bus horns on Cambie

I was hunched over my phone at 3:15 pm, rain on the windshield, Vancouver traffic moving like molasses on Georgia Street, trying not to look obvious while refreshing the ppf bancouver Instagram feed for the fourth time. My friend Leah had texted me an hour earlier: "Are they legit? My boss wants the car wrapped and ceramic coated, but the quote seems low." I still had coffee cold in the cup holder and a stack of paperwork on the passenger seat. It felt like detective work,

I was squinting through drizzle at 9:05 a.m., the windows of my friend's Subaru fogged from two people and a thermos of bad coffee, while the installer walked us through the prep bay like he owned the place. Rain on the building's corrugated metal made a steady, impatient tap. I had been dragged out of my Saturday to play mediator, translator, and moral support. My friend, exhausted from scouring Yelp and community boards, had finally picked a shop in east Vancouver after a
