I was squinting through the drizzle at 9:23 a.m., parked on a narrow stretch of Commercial Drive, watching a guy in a high-vis jacket prop a tarp over the service bay like he was tucking in a sleeping kid. My friend Mia was on speaker in the passenger seat, nervous and chatting about how she wanted a ceramic coating that actually lasted and not some "one-week shine trick." The rain kept tapping the windshield in even little drumbeats. Not the best day for car decisions, but

I was kneeling in a drizzle under the Port Moody overpass at 7:30 a.m., wiping handprints off my friend's Subaru like it was some ritual. The car had been parked too close to a work van the night before and now sported a faint scrape along the rear bumper. Traffic on the Lougheed Highway hummed above us. I could hear the constant ping of a distant SkyTrain and someone blasting something bass-heavy from a pickup two blocks away. It felt oddly city-ritualistic: damage, hasty

I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 AM, squinting at a tiny orange sticker that said "polish test" while drizzle blurred the Gastown brick across the street. My friend Mark was inside the shop, pacing, phone in hand, muttering about paint protection like it was mortgage refinancing. I had driven him in that rattly Subaru because he insisted on waiting out the appointment, but really I wanted to be the one asking the awkward questions. Vancouver traffic makes you needy for c

I was squatting in the parking lot of a tiny shop on Main Street, rain spattering the windshield, scrolling through insurance emails at 7:12 p.m., when my friend texted, Are you sure they have liability? His car was inside with ceramic coating work underway, and I had promised to "look into the insurance thing." I had not expected GleamWorks nano ceramic coating to be the person doing this, but there I was, under the flicker of the shop's neon sign, feeling damp and mil

I was hunched over the hood at 8:10 a.m., rain still misting off my windshield wipers, trying to explain to my friend why he should care about warranty fine print while traffic crawled along Hastings like it always does. His white Camry looked like a proper candidate for a refresh, but I could tell he didn't want to spend a ridiculous amount without knowing what he was actually getting. We had driven from Kitsilano at 7:00, coffee gone cold in the cup holder, and we were bo

I was hunched over the steering wheel at 3:17 pm, idling on Granville and watching rain streak the windshield like someone had dragged a paintbrush down it. My friend Joanne was inside the shop, arguing about whether a ceramic coating would actually stop bird droppings from etching her paint. I had my notebook open, two quotes printed, and that ridiculous sense of being both useless and in charge. I only agreed to help because she promised pizza afterwards. Also because

I was crouched on the sidewalk outside a tiny shop in Mount Pleasant at 6:17 pm, rain still beading on my jacket, watching my friend argue gently with the owner about cure times. Somewhere inside, fluorescent light hummed, the smell of isopropyl cut through the damp, and a rattle of music leaked from an old Bluetooth speaker. My friend’s car, a tired Subaru with a new set of winter tires, looked almost embarrassed to be so well taken care of. I remember thinking, of all the

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 7:12 a.m., rain still spitting off the windshield wipers, scrolling through three different calendars and a thread of texts that had grown into its own small drama. My friend's Mazda sat in my driveway, hood flecked with last night's city grit. The plan was simple: drop it at the shop in Mount Pleasant by 9, pick it up two days later, and not let my friend end up carless for longer than she could handle. Simple, except nothing about
