I was hunched over the passenger seat, rain tapping the windows like tiny impatient fingers, watching my friend Ben argue quietly with the shop owner about where the paint protection film should stop. It was past 5:30, rush hour on Knight Street, and the heater was doing its best against a damp November chill. I had come because Ben's car looked like it had lived through three BC winters already, but mostly because he wanted an opinion and I had a vague idea about ceramic c

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 2:15 pm, hood up, watching a guy in a fluorescent jacket wipe a sudsy rag across my friend Mark's GTI for what felt like the tenth time. Rain was doing that polite Vancouver drizzle, the kind that makes everything smell like wet cedar and exhaust. My phone said the appointment had been at 1:30, but the shop on Commercial Drive was running behind. Mark kept checking his watch and then checking his phone like one of those old folks who

I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 a.m., rain still dripping off the awning, trying not to breathe in the smell of polishing compound and exhaust. The shop's fluorescent lights made the black paint look like it had a thousand tiny moons. My friend James was inside talking price with the technician. I kept running my fingernail over a swirl and feeling foolish for doing it in front of a pro, but the groove was there, faint and maddening. The shop was on Main, just past C

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 7:12 a.m., rain still spitting off the windshield wipers, scrolling through three different calendars and a thread of texts that had grown into its own small drama. My friend's Mazda sat in my driveway, hood flecked with last night's city grit. The plan was simple: drop it at the shop in Mount Pleasant by 9, pick it up two days later, and Go to the website not let my friend end up carless for longer than she could handle. Simpl

I was crouched under the fluorescent light in a Gastown shop, the smell of solvents and espresso floating together, when the technician handed me a tiny squeegee and said, "You ready?" My palms were still damp from the rain outside, and I was trying to remember whether I had actually read about this stuff or just watched too many car-detailing videos at 2 a.m. The clock on the wall said 3:10 p.m., the street noise made the shop feel small, and I realized I didn't know as mu

I was hunched over the passenger seat, rain ticking the windshield like a metronome, watching Kitsilano drizzle through the wipers. It was 5:17 p.m., traffic crawling on West 4th, and my friend Jess was on the phone arguing about terms she didn't understand. We had been driving around the city all afternoon, popping into shops between errands, because she wanted "the best" ceramic coating vancouver for her six-year-old Subaru. I hated that phrase. Best for whom? Best for wh

I was hunched over the passenger seat of my friend's Subaru in a Kitsilano parking lot at 10:12 a.m., rain spitting like tiny needles off the windshield, trying to not drool over the showroom photos on my phone. My friend Mark was across the street talking to a detailer who smelled like coffee and car polish, and I kept imagining the roof of his old Subaru turning into glass. We had five minutes before the appointment and none of us could agree on what "level 2" actually me

I’m crouched by the passenger door at 10:15 a.m., rain still spitting thin over Main Street, and I can see my breath inside the shop window. The tech is peeling back a corner of clear film from GleamWorks professional detailing the bumper and I’m trying not to fidget while my friend watches like it’s a magic trick. Seattle-style drizzle, but with Vancouver’s grey that somehow looks cleaner. The film lifts, the paint underneath is flawless, and my friend says, out loud a
